Remembrance Sunday 2011

Remembrance Sunday 2011 was without doubt one of the most impressive band events to date.  For seventeen band members it was their first Remembrance Parade and they did exceptionally well.

Our drum major Patrick Mouchel led the band with great poise, pride and professionalism.   The band looked and sounded magnificent.  Thanks to each and every band member for making John Seabrook, Johnpaul Wyndham and John Wyndham extremely proud.

Amersfoort Holland 2011

C/P Harriet Williams

We set off for Holland early Friday evening after a busy day at school and work.  Everyone was getting very excited as we got on the coach.  After a long and tiring journey we arrived at the hotels at about 1am.  Both hotels were very nice and it didn’t take anyone very long to fall asleep!

We woke up bright and early the next morning filled with excitement for the day ahead.  We enjoyed a lovely breakfast at the hotels before heading off to briefly practice outside.  Having ensured that there was not a hair out of place (for the girls at least!) we went to the Juliana band room where we were warmly welcomed with a lovely lunch.

We then took part in a parade around Amersfoort where we took the opportunity to meet the other bands and practice the finale massed band pieces before the evening tattoo.  We were very grateful to receive a very thoughtful gift from the Juliana band also.

After having dinner at a local restaurant we prepared for the evening tattoo and watched the other bands warming up.  The atmosphere was electric and the nerves were setting in!  The tune for the weekend was set when the Juliana Youth Band marched off to the Venga Boys – “We like to Party”!  A popular number for us to play in the future!

We awaited our turn to perform in the arena whilst watching the other bands.  They were all very impressive and it was good to see the other styles of bands.  And then, it was our turn! The show was spectacular and we received resounding applause from the crowds.  A special mention must be made to all the new ones who performed perfectly!  The whole band was buzzing from such an amazing performance and we all received many compliments from the audience and other bands.  It was definitely one of our best shows ever!  Well done everyone!

We said goodbye to our new friends from the Juliana band who we hope to see again soon and headed back to the hotels for a well deserved rest and bed.  We made our way safely (and a lot more quietly!) home to England on Sunday all having enjoyed another fantastic weekend together.  Thanks to the Juliana band for inviting us to Amersfoort, Holland.

Aulnay, France 2010
Aulnay, France 2010                                                          Our journey to the town was an interesting one.

Our position throughout the day was 2nd behind the French Imperial Guard Band. I'd like to think we had been given the position as a mark of respect having previously performed so well in the festival. The weather was fine for the event, if a little humid but this brought the crowds out on to the streets and we were well received with the crowds applauding and cheering as we marched past. On completion we were taken for lunch with all the other bands.

As was the tradition each band gave a little demonstration of their virtuosity and not to be outdone the Corps of Drums clipped their drums on and marched into the dining room to carry out their display. This was well received and seemed to spur on other bands to show their musical skills. The last events were the march from the town to the hall and the individual displays. We marched on 2nd to huge applause and carried out our marching display with impeccable precision. The band consisted of 33 members but sounded double this as they rose to the occasion and played their hearts out. The drums capped the event by receiving a standing ovation for their display. All the bands then marched into the arena for the finale and were conducted through Happy Birthday in celebration of the festivals 20th Year of existence, ironically the same as our own band. Each band then received a trophy bearing a plaque and a mounted piccolo cornet. Our youngest member Olivia Gardner receiving her award for being the youngest performer in the festival. The weekend was a great success enjoyed by all who took part and one more triumph for the RBLYBB.
