Originally formed as a bugle band in 1990 the Brentwood Branch of The Royal British Legion formally adopted the Band in March 1993. The band performs within various musical arenas from garden parties to beating retreat ceremonies and concerts.

The Royal British Legion Youth Band Brentwood celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2010. Transformed into the Military Band you see today it has been modelled on a British Army Regimental Band and currently consists of 60 to 80 members with ages ranging from 10 to 25. We encourage continued membership after this age with our older members becoming instructors.

The band is affiliated to the 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division Polar Bear Association and proudly wears the Polar Bear insignia on their uniform. Although affiliated to The Royal British Legion, the Band derives no financial benefit and is entirely self-supporting. Volunteer instructors give all tuition and support freely.

Mr John Wyndham MBE founded the band with a vision of encouraging its young members to develop self-discipline and a team spirit. His own positive experiences in the Sea Cadets gave him the desire to emulate that arena but also to push the boundaries further. His achievements are very evident in the splendid youth band we see today.

The bands ethos remains the same today as it was in the beginning aiming to encourage and train young musicians, to develop them both mentally and physically for the demanding musical schedule of concert and marching performance. Band members are regularly exposed to a variety of musical experiences such as performing with professional military bands performing concerts and displays extensively in the UK and abroad and rehearsing twice weekly come rain or shine. The Band's main endeavour is engagements of a ceremonial nature and as such lead Brentwood's Remembrance Parade and through its young members helps to keep alive acknowledgement of the sacrifices made by service men and women of the Armed services.

Through its association with The Royal British Legion, the Band aims to promote the work done by this wonderful charity to help serving and ex-Service personnel and their families. Not just those who fought in the two World Wars, but also those involved in the many conflicts since 1945 and those still fighting today.
